Hi,

When I download a file from the Internet and choose "Open" instead of
"Save", I always get the following error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item."

The title of the error dialog reads:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\09U58T8B\file.exe

I've checked the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and the subfolders
mentioned (Content.IE5) aren't even there! ("Show hidden files and folders"
is checked).

I already deleted the entire "Temporary Internet Files" folder using another
account but the problem still exists. When logging in with another user I
get the same error, so it's not a user-specific problem.

Any hints are welcome.

Thank you,
Johnny

Hi Johnny :)

Try the following and see if it helps.

Clear TIF Files
The temporary files only holds so many files, so perhaps you might try
clearing the Temporary Internet Files and History.

Tools | Internet Options | At the Temporary Internet Files click on Settings
| View Files tab | Edit | Select All \ click Delete key, then click OK.
Click Clear History

Thanks,

But like I said, I already deleted the entire TIF folder. Windows recreated
it at startup, but the problem's still there.

It seems like Windows tries to start the downloaded file from a folder in
the TIF that's not there.

Keep them hints coming, thank you.

Hi Johnny :)
Thanks,

But like I said, I already deleted the entire TIF folder. Windows
recreated it at startup, but the problem's still there.

It seems like Windows tries to start the downloaded file from a
folder in the TIF that's not there.

Normally, there is the Contents IE 5 (or 6) folder as standard installation,
and when the TIF files are properly cleared, i.e. via the Internet Options,
not via the Explorer, the Contents IE5 folder is left as is, and not
removed. If this folder has been deleted in someway, or by someone, then
this may cause a problem. I think what you might try is a repair of the IE5
and see if that helps restore the Content folder. Also, I would like to
advise you that you should upgrade your IE at least to the IE6, but, best
protection using IE is the IE6 SP1. Using IE5 leaves your system vulnerable
to many of the various types of virus & worm attacks that can cripple, and
in some cases, do serious harm to your computer.

Below are the instructions for repairing your IE, and following that, I have
included the information to upgrade and install IE6 and IE6 SP1, should you
choose to upgrade.
However, before you do that, please download and run the CWShredder to make
sure there's no malware on your system to interfere with the repair.

8. Click the radio button or box next to it, then click OK
9. Let it run the repair
10. Reboot you computer

Can't Install IE SP1 - Per Oops!

For the "unable to install all components" issue in WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Hope this helps.
