Problem using ICS with win XPas host and win 2003 machine as clien

Hi there

I have enabled ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on my XP Pro machine in
order to setup a small remote network on my garage. The XP machine connects
to the internet via a wireless internet connection. I have enabled DHCP on
the LAN connection on this machine. This machine is then connected to a hub
via a network cable. I then have a second machine that is running win 2003
server that also has the LAN connection set to DHCP, and which is also
connected to the same hub. Both machines LAN connections are assigned IPs by
ICS on the XP machine.

I can ping the 2003 machine from the XP host.
I can explore any shared drives / folders on the 2003 machine from the XP
host.
The XP host has internet connectivity - I can surf and get email.

I cannot ping the XP machine from the 2003 machine, but the 2003 machine
DOES resolve the correct IP number if I type ping turoc (turoc being the name
of the XP host machine).
I cannot ping any websites from the 2003 machine, BUT it does resolve the
correct IP number for any given website (like if I type ping www.google.com,
I get Pinging www.google.com(168.223.456.678 or whatever the IP is) ...

BUT the I get a request timed out error message ?

So the problem is that I can see the 2003 machine in its entirety, and can
access it from theXP machine, but I cannot see or access the XP host machine
from the win 2003 machine, nor can I surf the internet from this machine.

I am sure its a permission problem or something similar, but I do not know
how to fix it.

Please help. I really need to get this sorted out.

Thanks in advance
Sian

Inability to ping the XP machine or access shares is probably attributable
to the XP firewall or third party security software. You should either
disable this or configure an exception for file and printer sharing.

Inability of the server to access the Internet sounds like a routing issue:

1. On the XP machine run ipconfig /all - make sure that the wireless
adapter does not have a 192.168.0.x address.

2. On the server run ipconfig /all. The LAN connection must have a default
gateway of 192.168.0.1. If there are other adapters in this machine, they
should not be configured with a default gateway.

3. You have a double NAT configuration - ie. ICS is performing NAT on
packets from the server which are destined for the Internet, then your
wireless router is performs NAT again. Usually this works, but sometimes it
does not work well or at all. If your router supports static routes, you
could use LAN routing instead of ICS to give the server Internet access.
Also, if you removed ICS, you might be able to make this work by simply
bridging the LAN and wireless connections on the XP machine.

Sian,

Please see my reply to your other post.

Thank you for the assistance. The problem was the firewall in my F-Secure
Anti Virus software being incorrectly configured. I have switched this
off,but kept my Windows XP firewall enabled, and now I have full network
comms.
