Problem upgrading to XP Pro from 98SE

Installation stops with a fatal error message: A components file does not
match the verification information present in the component manifest.
SXS.DLL Syntax error in manifest or pooling file
E\1386\asms\6000\msft\vcrtl\vcrtl.man on line 17

Any ideas what this means?

Appreciate any help to overcome this problem.

Will, Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I have gone through the two
articles and have already tried all the steps in the preparation to
upgrading but still get the same error message. It would appear that I have
a file missing which stops the set up proceeding at the installation
stage.???
Any further ideas?

Will, thanks for the further info.
No success so I have decided to attempt a dual boot with a clean install of
XP ... I have two hard drives so intend to install XP onto my slave as
windows 98SE is on the primary (C) drive.
Will resort if I have problems.
