problem saving xls files into shared folders location

The users in my network are complaining about this problem:

They open Excel files from shared folder location and after changes in the
file, when trying to save, they get a message sating that the file will be
saved under a name something like "E0720002" (different every time). After
that the file with the original name disappears from the location, the
E0720002 file is there but with no (xls) extension and the users are left
without a clue about where the file is -- usually they do not read the
message stating that "E0720002" will be the name of the file (I can't blame
them, all they want is to use their data effectively).

The shared folder on the server is correctly set up with full permissions
for the users, so this should not be a cause. Moreover, there was a time
when the shared location was set up with full permissions for "Everyone" and
the above-mentioned behaviour was the same also at that time.

Can you help me with a soution ?

Thank you,
Emil.

Some background:

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension) in the same folder.

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

If you're seeing that funny named file, then something is going wrong.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

It sounds to me that the users don't have all the permissions they need--they
can create, delete, but they can't rename. I'd ask the IT folks to double check
that.
