problem running mpeg movies with laptop

I have a problem with playing mpeg movies within Powerpoint when my laptop
is connected to a beamer (dual monitor mode).
The movie runs on the laptop's screen but the movie on the beamer's screen
is black. When I switch to beamer only, the movie will play again, but I
have no image on the laptop's display.
This is not only in PowerPoint but also with any mpeg movie I play in the
Windows Media Player.
I don't have this problem with AVI movies, only mpeg, and only with a
laptop. With my PC (with Matrox G450 dual head video card) there is no
problem.
I noticed that other people also have this problem with their laptop. Does
anyone have a solution?
