problem rec. emails

We are having problems rec. emails.

Sometimes gives message 'failed to initialize 0x800106ba'

When we click on send/receive it comes up and says 'receiving list of
senders' then when it is about 1/3rd of the way through it says
'disconnecting'.

We know we have emails as we have had people send them to us and they aren't
arriving! It tells us in the bottom right corner 'No new emails'

Any suggestions.
