Problem LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA 4167B

I'm experiencing trouble with LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA 4167B.

I first installed it (plug and play, no driver or software came with it) and
it all seemed to work fine (as i didn't try to burn a dvd).
- in device manager it appears like HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA 4167B.
- it reads original DVD's and any kind of CD's and it even burns CD's.
- in windows explorer it appears as DVD-RAM device.

Now, I tried to burn a DVD and it simply won't work.
As soon as I insert a blank DVD+R (I'm using TDK single layer ones) windows
change the device name for CD-ROM and the drive becomes inaccessible.
I read about similar things happening to other LG DVD RAM users but still
have no answer to the problem.

I've been wondering around LG site and I've updated the firmware from DL11
to DL13. Didn't work.
Can't find any windows driver and, in other forums I've been in, I
discovered that there is none because it's supposed to use generic ones that
come with windows. LG simply does not provide a driver (except firmware) for
this drive.

I've got Windows XP Home Edition and Service Pack 2 and made all the updates
till today. Still doesn't work.

Ah, the software I'm using is Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 Basic because it's
the one which came with the computer. It's able to record DVD's as it has
that option but when I press "burn" it replies an error saying "there is no
DVD Recorder installed".
I think there is also the possibility of drag and drop in windows explorer
(I'm not sure if supplementar software is needed) but trying it that way I
get the message is that "D: is not accessible".

I've read (in some other forum) that it might have something to do with the
PSU unit having less than 300W but I find that a lame explanation because it
would either work or not I think.
But the damn thing work's for everything except for what I bought it for,
burn my backups.

I'd appreciate any help somebody could give to me before I'm going crazy
with this. I just wan't the thing to burn some backup copies of my documents.

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Roxio Easy CD Creator basic 5 had problems with DVDs. Also, most Retail
versions of the LG drive usually come with with Nero OEM. You definetly need
to update the software to a more recent version.

Thanks for the tips.
In fact I bought it with nothing included. The vendor said it was just like
that. I mean, just the drive itself.
But I see now in the link you sent me that I was dumb to believe it.
think I got to go to the store and make some noise.
:)
Thank you again.

PorriWonder,

That seems odd that no software was included with the drive. I have the
same model DVD-RW as you and it included a copy of Nero 6 (OEM, of course).

I ended up purchasing a retail copy of Nero 6 Ultra Edition as I use more
than one burner (OEM copy is only good for the drive it was sold with). I
have had absolutly no trouble with Nero and this drive on both Windows XP Pro
and Windows XP x64.

Although, I'd go see your vendor once more and find out why Nero wasn't
bundled with the drive. I suppose in the worst case scenario, you'd have to
buy Nero. Also, your copy of Roxio was probly OEM (you mention it's the one
that came with the computer) - so, it can *only* be used with your previously
installed burner. That's likely why you are having trouble burning with the
Roxio software.

Good luck!

I am having similar problems with the same DVD drive. I have used it for
burning DVD with nero, windows and i-Tunes on a XP-64bitOS. But it has
stopped being recognised recently and every time I unistall it reinstalls
with the correct ID and capability. But on inserting blank DVD's it changes
to CDROM and is functionless.

Any other ideas?
