Problem interfacing with printer

K

klakh

I have a Dell 8100 Pentium 4, running Windows XP – Sp3. I had need of a real
workhorse printer using black ink only. From the group that is in the same
business as I am, most recommended that I find a HP 4200 printer. I found
one on e-bay from a reputable company. When it arrived, I hooked it up and
when I would click on “print†the printer screen would read “processing jobâ€
then it would not print, but go back to the “ready†mode. I changed drivers
several times with no success. Then I called an HP service man who spent an
hour here and couldn’t resolve the problem, and he called a computer “expertâ€
who came and decided that the board in the printer that interfaces with the
computer was bad. I contacted the company I purchased it from and after
discussing several possile solutions, they sent me a new interface board.
Still, the problem existed. So, they sent me another printer which I have
just installed and much to my dismay, the same problem!!

Do any of you have any ideas of what the problem is and how to correct it?

Thank you in advance!
Karen

Shot in the dark. Remove the printer. Uninstall the printer driver. Reboot.
DO NOT connect printer but reinstall the driver.
Then when told to do so connect the printer. OR, if not told to do so
connect it last (install new hardware).
Is the 4200 a USB printer? (Universal Serial Bus).

You have a problem with HP hardware. This newsgroup deals with Windows XP.

Search the web, perhaps?

I am well aware that I am in the XP group. I'm here because we cannot
determine what the problem is with...the computer, the printer or the
operating system.

Not burst the bubble of the OP but I have seen a lot of hardware
posted on eBay with questionable history.

Hi Karen,

Media Center Service Pack 3, Home Edition or Professional Edition
Service Pack 3?

Have you installed all the HP Drivers for the HP 4200?

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...Id=84028&prodTypeId=18972&supportTaskId=23055

Does the HP 4200 that you purchased, require a 2.0 USB Port? Does your
computer have a 2.0 USB Port?

Have you made sure in Printers and Faxes that the Printer saids Ready?

Have you disabled the Software Firewall? Which Software Firewall are you
using?

Karen,
Does this printer connected only to this machine or shared with other
machines?
What Tray did you select for the paper to use and did you set the printer as
default?
Do you have another printer software installed on this machine?
Did you tried this printer on another machine and see if this machine will
print okay to determine if it is windows issue or Printer configurations
issue?

Here are some info from HP site:
1. The file sent to the printer may be corrupted. Try sending a
different print job.
2. The printer itself may not be working correctly. (Verify that a
Self-Test page prints correctly to eliminate this possible explanation.)
3. The data cable may be defective. (Use a different cable if
printing through a parallel connection. If connected to a network, ensure
that the hub connection is functioning properly.
4. The correct printer port may not be selected, for example, if the
printer is set to a network port when the hardware port being used by the
printer is actually LPT1.
5. The printer port may not be configured correctly, for example,
using current lpt.vxd and a standard printer port.
6. The printer driver may be corrupted. (Printing to a file from the
print dialogue box and then copying the file from DOS to the printer will
help determine if this is the correct explanation for unexpected printer
output.)
7. The application being used may be sending a notification header
that appears on the printer display.

Modify the printer default

Try a diffrent cable to connect this printer from serial to parallel cable.

Have you searched the HP site for a possible update for the printer driver?
Is the printer compatible with XP?

K

klakh

Yes, SP 3. When I said I had installed all the downloads, it was all the
downloads that were options for the 4200 on my computer. I clicked on the
link you sent and and cannot figure out which topic or download I need. The
printer icon says ready.
Firewall is disabled.

The first thing I'm going to do is buy a new parallel cable. Then I will try
each step you suggest, one by one. It will be awhile before I am back on.
Thank you so much for the thought you put into this answer.

Borrow another printer you know works. Install it and print a test page.

If that works on your system, you have eliminated both the computer and the
OS as factors. The problem is then with the HP printer.

BTW, I have purchased a number of inexpensive Samsung lasers, which work
just fine, and cost around $100 new. The last one I bought has a network
card and rpints duplex, for $100.

To those who suggested I might have a bad cable, you were right. I never
imagined that could possibly be the problem and neither did the "experts" I
paid to help me. I purchased a parallel with a usb connection on one end,
the computer detected it immediately and I am up and running. Thank you all
for responding. I am grateful to you.

Computer end (USB) to printer end (parallel port Centronics 36)
adapter cable???

You need to know that these adapter are not always created "equal."
Some are more reliable (better quality) than others.
