problem installing XP Pro with service pack 1A

I have purchased an OEM original disk of Xp Pro with
service pack 1a included. When I install the software the
PC boots, checks hardware compatability and installs all
the files and re-boots.The screen advising "windows is
installing - 39 minutes remaining" appears but the install
does not progress from this point, even if left for 2
hours! I have replaced 512mb generic memory with a Crucial
branded pc2100 ddr module, I have disabled USB, LAN
adapter, ON board sound in the bios and changed the the
Hard disk. What is WRONG??
The strange part is exactly the the same hardware will
quite happily install and run Win95, Win98 and Win2000 pro!

Is this a faulty CD Rom or is something esle the cause.
Any help very much appreciated.

I have recently come across this problem when scanning microsoft knowledge base. It specifically addressed this problem (the 39 minute hang up).

Isn't troubleshooting a hoot!!
