Vista uses a different master boot record than previous Microsoft OSs. I
suppose it is possible that your WXP installation CD doesn't see the drive
because of the strange MBR. Perhaps you can get a friend to download the
image of the ultimate boot disc and uses it to write zeros to the first few
sectors of the hard drive. This should make it visible to the WXP
installation CD.

You will probably have to check with the laptop manufacturer to see if they
have XP Drivers for that particular model laptop.
In a new laptop, XP does not exist

I think the version of NTFS in Vista causes problems too.

I would use a good old DOS bootdisk (or CD) and do:

fdisk /mbr

then run fdisk and remove the "non-DOS partition" from the drive.

Then try again.

The laptop hard drive is probably SATA and XP doesn't have the SATA
drive controllers. The usual way to deal with this is to have the drive
controller drivers on a floppy drive or slipstreamed into the install
CD. Unless you have an external USB floppy drive, you'll need to do the
latter.

Integrate the controller driver (slipstream) -

(Can be adapted to Windows 2003, etc.)

Slipstream RAID or SATA controller drivers:

You will need to get all drivers for your laptop for XP from the laptop
mftr.'s website for your specific model laptop.
