Re-installing Vista on a original XP laptop

I have a laptop which came with XP, but I installed the Vista upgrade several
months ago. I want to restore or re-format the harddrive. I assume I must use
the XP disc to restore the laptop, then reinstall the Vista upgrade.
Is there anyway after I install Vista to delete all the xp programs?
Or is my best option to go out and buy Vista software (non upgrade)
