problem installing programs from cds

i jus got a new dell with vista premium installed on it, and everytime i try
to install a program from a cd (ie age of empires 3, other games, etc.) i
get two error messages the first saying "error 1324. the path ? contains an
invalid charachter." followed by "Error: -1603 Fatal error during
installation" . i tried changing the path but the same thing happens
everytime i try to install from a cd. i have no idea how to fix it, you would
think like age of empires 3 would install, it being a microsoft game, much
less any other program. nothing seems to work

First, try right-clicking the game installer on the CD and using the "Run as
Administrator" option.

Second, have you checked the games' support web sites to see if they have
Vista support or install options?

Jack ... another thing to try:

When you insert the first installer CD, hold down the shift key so the
installer will not automatically run.
Open My Computer, open your CD drive icon, and find setup.exe (there are
other installer routine names but this is the most common.)
Right-click on setup.exe, click on Properties, select the Compatibility tab,
and set compatibility to WinXP. Click OK (or Apply, if present and not
grayed out.)
Then, try running setup.exe.

Richard Harper's replies are also good leads and you may find a checkbox for
Run As Administator at the bottom of the Compatibility tab (sorry ... can't
remember just now if it is there.)

Good luck .... vanilla
