Problem finding CDs

Hello there!

I have a problem with WindowsXP finding the disks I insert in my CD
drive. It only applies when a game is supposed to find the CD in the
drive; it doesn't and won't start up. I have had this with new and old
games.

The MicroSoft help section is a very disappointing, wax nose type of
support. There are some similiar known problems but "wait untill the
next service pack". I think I'll wait untill the next garbagetruck.

I have an NVidia Geforce4 MX 440 installed. And the newest DirectX9b
drivers. I understand that they don't work very well together, could
this be THE problem? And then would downgrading help? if possible?

If not so; anyone want to trade his/hers Windows2000 CD for a
WindowsXP Home Edition?

Thanks Chris! But I think I found an even better one in the Hardware
section of this newsgroup: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228985
Seems to identify the problem, tonight i'll try it. An aunt of mine is
experiencing the same problem aswell. Strange bug huh?

Groet! Rick

Yes, strange. That KB article was among my choices, Rick, but it does have
a lot of variables. 8-) Let us know what fixes it (in your case).

Hi Chris, I have fixed the problem with my computer. I think. I can
now play the game "Call of Duty" I recently bought. The older games
that didn't work, I lend them out.

On my aunt's computer however the problems is different. Her DVD- and
CD-Rom player don't read the CD-ROMs that are inserted. The pictograms
change alright to show that a CD-ROM is in the drive but when clicked
the contents is blank. Or the message apears that "a CD-ROM must be
placed" yadayada.

Any idea? She has a Plextor CD-R, and Plextor doesn't offer any
special XP driver for the model since they say that it's not necessary
'cause they are included with XP.

The DVD player DOES function when a DVD is inserted. And audio CD's
are also acceptable. Anti-virus type thingy perhaps?

Thanks in advance! Doeg!

Rick

Good for you and answering the Call of Duty. 8-) On the "older" games
issue, have you looked at the information on Compatibility Mode either in
Help and Support or in this TechNet article:

You may be pleasantly surprised by what can be played on Windows XP.

As for your Aunt's CD issues, I really haven't a clue. It could be a myriad
of things causing such a problem, including plain old dust on the lens. You
might have her try uninstalling the drive in Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM
drives with a right-click of the device and selecting Uninstall. A restart
of the system would kick in a re-recognition of the drive and properly
install XP's drivers for it.

Hi Dewi,

Actually you're fortunate. Your problem is different.
Your autorun is most likely disabled. A quick way
to enable it again is DL and run the Autoplay fix from:

| Just to let you know, I have the same problem as the aunt. My cd's will run, but only if I open them manually. they won't start
up automatically. This is really irritating as some people in the house don't know how to start them manually and I have to come
runnin. Hope someone figures this out soon.
