Merv

I have recently purchased a new computer and want to dual
boot. I have set up the partitions and instaled the
second OS, however the I can only boot the new OS (Win2K)
and WinXP Pro reports and error if I try to start it.

I have WinXP Pro on the 1st primary and win2K on the
second (D:\)primary. The problem I think is the fact that
the new machine is not supplied with and actual OEM disk
only the manufacturers recovery disks. Using these disks
I'm limited to the default instal that instals to C:\
only. With these manufacturer recovery disks the OS is
actually a Ghost image.

Two questions arise 1) Should I edit the boot.ini to get
the dual boot working and if so could someone provide me
with the edits? And 2) do you think that when we buy a
new system should we be entitled to recieve an actual
Windows OEM disk considering that's what we pay for?

Footnote: I took this up with the manufacturer (Acer) and
their response was that I would have to buy a Windows
System disk.

When you installed W2K it over-wrote the XP boot.ini file.
Since W2K doesn't do anything that XP can't, why do you want
to dual boot?

Anyway, you probably need at least an upgrade retail XP CD
to use to dual boot system. See

for MS instructions.

| so go borrow a OEM disk from someone or get someone to

See my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.

You need to boot into Windows 2000, and copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from
your XP CD to the root directory of the Boot drive. The Win 2K versions of
these files don't know about XP, but the XP versions know about Win2K.
