Problem copying or moving folders/files (mp3s) after XP clean install-- permissions help

J

jlawrie

I copied a previous posting to hopefully get some answers again. I'm
still having problems. I'm trying to clean
up my files (.mp3's) and move some folders here and there (see next
post below for specifics). Some times when I
try, I get the cannot move files error message described originally.
When I look in Security tab, there are various users w/ various
permissions. Is there a way to globally change this so all folders
can be moved? Is there something I can do to make this work for all
folders.

Thanks in advance. Problem accessing folders/files (mp3) after XP clean
install--help

I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2 on my C:/ drive. I have a
2nd HDD(G:/) with music, pictures and other folders/files on it. I
completely disconnected the 2nd drive while doing the XP install to
C:/. I'm having trouble accessing some of the folders/files on G:/.
It's a problem w/ my music folders. I have 8 folders some of which
work fine. When I click on others I get: "G:/music/newest is not
accessable" and "Access is Denied." Some FOLDERS I CAN open but when
I try to open an .mp3 file, I get error messages. When I try to open
particular .mp3 files w/ open with Windows Media Player, I get the
error message: "windows media could not access the file." Clicking
"more information," I get "0xC00D11D2: Cannot access the file" with
reasons such as file already in use (which it is not) and then
statements about not having permission to access the drive (except
that I can access other folders/files on this drive).

I've got various folders and files that all open and work fine.
Problem just seems to be w/ music files.

I've run ckdisk and defrag.

I have a really nice collection of .mp3 files at risk here. Any help
will be greatly appreciated.

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Produc...

In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP
Pro
you have to disable simple file sharing.

Take Ownership.

Search Microsoft for "take ownership of files and folders."

Hi. Believe it or not, I'm still having problems. I'm trying to clean
up my files and move some folders here and there. Some times when I
try, I get the cannot move files error message described originally.
When I look in Security tab, there are various users w/ various
permissions. Is there a way to globally change this so all folders
can be moved? Is there something I can do to make this work for all
folders.

Thanks in advance.

Try downloading Process Explorer utility (Free) from
www.sysinternals.com to see which processes have a handle on the
files/folders you are trying to move.
