What next? I found two entries in the section and I don't know what to
do with them.

Subject: Disabled right click suddenly - I want it back

A couple of days ago, I noticed that right clicking the taskbar no
longer worked. I had used it to kill some programs which loaded in
Start.

I don't know what might have caused this disabling. I did let Microsoft
install updates to Windows XP Home Edition but it was all supposed to
be for security.

How do I get it back? I often right-click to save pictures and
end/launch programs. I miss that capability.

Follow these steps:

1. Open Start, Run, type without quotes 'regedit' and press OK.
2. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
3. Delete the 'NoTrayContextMenu' value (if it exists) placed on the
right pane.
4. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and delete the value mentioned in step 3 (if it exists).
5. Exit Registry Editor and verify if the problem has gone.

I got to the HKEY pretty easily but the only things that showed up
were:

ab (Default) REG_SZ (Value not set)
" icon" NoDriveTypeAutoRun REG_DWORD 0x00000091 (145)

Can I safely remove one or both of these?

So there is no explanation for the loss of the right click capability
in this machine? I've done the abominable: allowed Microsoft to cram a
bunch of "security upgrades" to it. Earlier, I allowed Service Pack 2,
which resulted in a machine that wouldn't boot, so I went back in time
and have been stingy about upgrades.

.... How do I get that right click back? I have nowhere to look for the
problem but here. Is there no solution?

Doesn't work on Start button or Menu:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right-pane, delete the "NoTrayContextMenu" value (if exists).
This policy removes the context menus for the Start button, Taskbar,
and Notification area.

Or run line 56 (right hand side) from MVP Kelly Theriot's site:

I went into xp-tweaks and clicked Line 56. I lost the task bar
entirely. After restarting, it came back but I still have no right
click capability. I cannot open a new folder on the desktop, I can't
quit programs in the taskbar.

I think I'll test another mouse and make sure it's not something
mechanical.

Malke, I don't understand what that means.

Please quote at least some of the previous post for clarity. It means
that you should try those things, one at a time, testing after each
change.

If the change came about very suddenly, you might also try a System
Restore to a date when everything worked well.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier date"

I doubt this has anything to do with your mouse.
