dvd rom and rw and its still the same any suggestions please

Is the drive you're reading from running in DMA or PIO mode? (Check the IDE
controller in Device Manager.) If it's stuck in PIO mode, its performance
will be poor.

Some information is available:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817472

"IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple time-out or CRC errors
occur"

Some hotfixes are mentioned, but the easiest thing to try in uninstalling
the IDE controller (Device Manager again) and rebooting. The controller
ought to re-install when XP starts up again, and come up in DMA mode.

Good luck.
