Problem attaching/inserting an attachment in Outlook 2003 SP3

Hello,

I have a problem on one users desktop, who uses Outlook 2003 SP3 on XP
Professional SP3 ---

When they attempt to attach a file to a new or open a current email ---
When the paper clip is clicked on to attach, a window opens "insert file",
if you click the drop down in "look in" Outlook freezes, you get - outlook
not responding in the application tab in task manager.

But - if you do not click on the "look in" drop down, and instead you click
on the left bar where desktop, my documents, my computer, my network places
is shown ---- those options do not freeze outlook.

I did a "repair" on Outlook, but that did not help, still can not choose a
value(drop down) in the "look in" area.

For now --- I told my user to not choose the look in/drop down, but to get
the attachment by going thru my computer, my network places.

Does anyone know why Outlook 2003 SP3 freezes when you try to attach a file
to an email by choosing insert file, look in, click the drop down to navigate
to the location of the file ---- yet if they stay away from that and choose
desktop, my computer, etc... they can attach a file into email ? and ---- how
to fix ? My next thought was to uninstall-re-install Outlook.

thanks,
Bob

This is likely related to mapped drives. Are the mapped drives deleted and
remapped at each login or not (are you running a login script that deletes
the drives and remaps them)? If they're just mapped as persistent drives,
this could be the problem.

Hi Kathleen,

Drives are mapped, no logon scripts. We manually map a drive and keep the
default "re-connect at logon".

But --- the only way we can attach is by leaving the drop down alone, we
must leave the drop down at the default - my documents - if we click on the
drop down we are frozen.

How do you recommend fixing this ?

Thanks,
Bob

As a test, disconnect the drives, restart the PC, and remap them. Then try
to attach something.

Ok - that worked ----

I disconnected the mappings, reboot, then I was able to click the drop down
without outlook freezing. Then I re-mapped the drives for the user and was
ablt to click the drop down and choose/open their mapped drives.

I will keep this note for future reference if someone has trouble. Thanks
for your help !!

Hi Bob

You may want to implement a simple batch script to use as a login script
that removes the persistent mappings at login and remaps them. That's what I
have done.
