My computer is set up in five account with family
members. I wish to set up my book keeping program in my
own account and set it up private so other family members
such as my kids can not have access to the program and
data in the program.

I'll assume that you're using Windows XP Home Edition. If you were using
Windows XP PRO, setting security for files and folders is a built-in
feature. Most accounting/book keeping programs like
quicken/quickbooks/money etc, have an option for a password for your
account. So, if someone tried to open let's say your quickbooks account, a
box would open asking for the password. So, no one would have access to
your data if they didn't know the password. Search the HELP in your book
keeping program using: Password for the key word.

If the program installed itself so that everyone can use it the first step
is to remove the shortcut to the program from their "All Programs" list.
This doesn't prevent someone exploring C: to find the program executable but
it's better than leaving it on their menu which practically invites them to
run it.

Try moving the shortcut from...

C: -> Documents and Settings -> All users -> Start Menu -> Programs etc

to...

C: -> Documents and Settings -> <your user name> -> Start Menu -> Programs

You will probably need to log in as admin to do this (and may need to make
hidden folders visable).

If you also have a shortcut to the program on everyones desktop then move
this in the same way.

If the install for the program is up to date, it will ask if you want
to set it up for everyone, or just for yourself. Even if it does not,
you can move the shortcut(s) generated for it from
C:\Documents and settings\All Users\StartMenu\Programs.. .
to a corresponding place in
C:\Docments and settings\you\.. ..
and only you will see it. It does not prevent someone looking in
Program Files or wherever for the program itself. You might make it
totally private by using a custom install and installing under
C:\Documents and Settings\you\ but I have not actually tried that.

If you then also make sure that all data files are made under "My
Documents" when you use it in your account, those will not be accessible
to other accounts (unless they have Administrator rights which you would
not provide for them)
