Printing while on the internet

When I print an email or a web page my internet connection drops (dial-up).
If I turn on my printer after I'm connected my connection drops. My machine
(HP Pavilion 7955) thinks the line is still up. I'm using XP-Home SP2. This
happens with IE-6 or Firefox. I have changed printer drivers and removed and
reinstalled the printer and port (LPT1) many times. The printer is an HP
Deskjet 870Cxi. HP said to drop back to drivers for Deskjet 550C - Didn't
help. Any suggestions?

Start>Control Panel>Printers and Faxes>rightclick your printer
and rightclick "Use printer online/offline" it will automatically switch
from offline to online.

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't help. I Also swapped out the HP
printer for a Xerox Workcentre XD 100, I still have the same problem..

Could this be caused by Windows XP Firewall settings?

Maybe, turn the firewall off and try again to see what happens.
I've tried that many times, it doesn't help. I've turned off all spyware and
virus programs that doesn't help either. HP tech Support suggests a system
restore, seems rather drastic to me. I'm hoping for an easier answer.
Thanks for your reply,
Bob J.
