Printing w/ Lexmark X4270 and Windows Vista.

The message below is a copy of my latest message back to Lexmark. Correct
driver installed twice and the printer is "trying to print", but continues to
be "fragmented" See details below. Can anyone help me to resolve this??
Printer worked perfectly w/ XP Pro!!

Dear Lexmark Help,
I AM DESPERATE! Printer output is still not working properly. I followed the
instructions to the letter...and everything seemed to load properly. I have
done
this twice now.

****Here are the symptoms:
Documents (from Word, excel, email or the Web, etc.) are incomplete...missing
lines and sentences....partial words cut in half.....double printing.....very
fragmented. The beginning of the document seems to start out OK, but begins
fragmenting from that point on.

It IS NOT a mechanical hardware problem as it COPIES PERFECTLY! It has got
to be related to the MS Vista OS!

Note: I cleaned the cartridges manually, but when I tried to use the
maintenance
tool to fix, align and print test pages, the printer "locks up" halfway
through
the process. Then I get an error message that the printer is eitherr "busy"
or
"not communicating".

Please try to HELP! Thank you!!

Phil,
My printer (an HP) was also working perfectly until I had to buy a new
computer
which came with Vista. Then it stopped working, and there were no updated
drivers for the printer.

In my case, I found an driver for another HP printer that coincidentally
worked.

There is a place in Vista where you can try to get older peripherals to work
by
defining a previous operating system in which they did work. I am not too
sure
how successful this is, and maybe others here can comment. I am still
trying
to find my way around Vista myself.

I am looking forward to the ASUS PC701, which runs Linux but can run some
MS systems. I want something that is stable, simple (like me), and less
hobbled
by the operating system than is often the case with the large MS systems.

You could have got help quicker if you'd posted in the correct NG... which
is Print, Fax and Scan.

First... did you try the basics, such as changing the USB cable?

If it's locking up during an alignment cycle, then it's the action hardware
of the printer, probably the timing ribbon (or Lexmark's equivalent). If
it's under guarantee, take it to a Lexmark Service Center.

If you still believe it's Vista, find a friend who still runs XP, install it
on their PC and see if it prints correctly there, using YOUR USB cable.

Then report back with the results to the correct NG.

First, to be clear, the "correct" driver to which you refer is the Vista
compatible driver from the Lexmark site?

Second, when you installed the driver, did you first make sure to uninstall
any previous drivers and software for the printer?

Third, when you installed the Vista drivers, did you start with the printer
disconnected from the computer or was it connected? Most, not all, USB
devices need to be disconnected from the system at the beginning of driver
install. Be sure to check your Lexmark documentation for proper
installation procedures.

If none of the above helps, in addition to waiting for Lexmark's reply, you
might get better help with this issue on the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan newsgroup.

Michael,
Thanks for your input. 1) Yes, it was supposedly the correct driver right
from Lexmark 2)All previous drivers were uninstalled 3) USB cable definitely
disconnected until prompted to reconnect. KUE2 has an interesting thought.
His attachment shows driver #cjs4200EN for Vista x64 ?? I installed cjr4200EN
for Vista per Lexmark. Perhaps I need the x64 version....whatever that is. I
guess I'll try it.

X64 drivers are for the 64-bit version of XP. Unless you specifically
ordered the 64-bit version, you more than likely have the 32-bit. "System,"
in Control Panel well tell you which version you have.
