Printing selection shows page breaks?

When printing by highlighting a section of a document and choosing to print
the selection, Word does not print existing headers and footers. In
addition, the page break lines in my document are printed (it literally says
pagebreak) but does not actually break the page. It doesn't seem to do this
when printing by page number or the entire document or even current page. It
just started doing this. What have I done to my settings (as I think it is
safe to assume that I am the root cause, though I have no idea when I might
have done it).

I don't think you've done anything to the settings, but when you choose to
print just a selection, that's all you get.

Suppose you want to print a selection from two or more consecutive pages.
Use Format-Font to make the text before and after the selection into hidden
text. In Tools-Options-Print tab, uncheck "Print hidden text." You should
then get just the unhidden text as well as the page numbers, headers, and
footers.
