Printing from "DOS" in WinXP

P

Pete Schultz

Windows XP does not support printing from the command window (cmd.exe or
command.exe).
I have a HP LJ IIP that (used to, in earlier versions of Windows) allow
me to down load fonts to the printer as well as text files with control
strings imbedded in them. Now, with Windows XP I can't or don't know
how to do what I used to do. Is there any method or program that would
allow me to send fonts to the printer and use them, preferably from the
"DOS" window?

Thanks.

I find it strange you're having problem printing. I can print just fine
from DOS under Windows XP. Of course, if you're using the USB printer
adapter, forget that, DOS doesn't work with USB printer (or any USB
devices) without extra software like DOS USB driver or a TSR that traps
the printer command and directs it to Windows default printer.

Impmon,

I find YOUR experience strange as well.

I'm using a Canon i850 through the parallel port (LPT1) and Windows
98FE. I CAN'T print from the DOS window even with an innocuous redirect
"dir >lpt1" command. I also run an application that, though it is
started from Windows, still prints as though in DOS. I WAS sending PCL
codes to the printer, but the Canon doesn't recognize any. AND, I can't
get anything to print from the application.

I'm looking into a utility called DOSPRN Ver. 1.71 that is supposed to
solve the problem.

Incidentally, my old Panasonic KXP2123 still prints like a champ from
ANYTHING!
