Some antivirus programs tend to cause an assortment of problems in
Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. What if any antivirus
programs do you have, and have you ever had a Norton or McAfee
antivirus program on that computer, even one of the trial versions that
often come already installed on new computers?

The uninstall program from McAfee often fails to remove the part of that
program that causes problems in Windows Mail. You may need to run
this cleanup program:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Also, many antivirus programs need to have their email scanning
disabled to avoid causing problems in Windows Mail.
