Printer works sometimes only.

I have a Sharp AR5316 with WindowsXP-pro.

I do not have any problem printing documents
from Access2003, but I do with Word2003.

Is there some configuration in Word2003 I
should check to see if the documents are
suitable for this printer.

I have other printers connected and these
never give trouble.

The Sharp company does not know how to fix
this, and I have their latest driver.

All the printers have USB2 cables.

Please help, Frank

It's going to be hard to tell you what might be mis-configured until you
tell us what problem you're having. Most folks in these newsgroups aren't
very good mind readers, me included.

The Sharp AR5316 is a GDI printer. In this, I suspect, it is different
that the other printers you use. Also, Word checks the printer driver as
it does document layout. That makes it more sensitive to driver and port
issues than other programs that use printer services.

For diagnosis purposes:

Shut down the computer, power off. Disconnect all printers and
unnecessary USB devices. Restart the computer. Delete the printer driver
for the Sharp. Make sure you have a fresh copy of the latest printer
driver. Obtain an IEEE-certified parallel printer cable. (Yes, I know
you usually connect it by USB.) Read the installation instructions and
install the printer using the parallel printer port in accordance with
the instructions. Restart the computer. Ruin the printer tests.

Let us know. Also, more details of what you tried and the results would
help.

Thank you.

Originally the printer was installed with a
parallel printer cable but recently I changed
this to USB2 in desperation.

After your post I checked the settings in
Word2003 and tried a few new settings in Word
"Page Setup".

On the PageSetup "Paper" tab there are
options in the "Paper Source" box, and these
were set on 'AutoSelect' or 'Default'.

I have changed the settings to a new one
'Tray 1' which is the one I use for all the
routine output, and so far today it is all
working.

But it seems I have to manually change this
setting for all documents, several hundred!
Is there a way to do this globally in the
Word2003 system? Or elsewhere?

Your's optimistically, Frank
