Printer spool service is not working

After successfully installing and using HP 2575 and HP 1020 printers for two
months, the complete printing software on my Dell Laptop (using Vista Home
Premium) totally collapsed (perhaps co-incidentally) when attempting to print
a pdf email. Messages state that 'the printer spool service is not running'
and 'Spooler Subsystem App stopped working and was closed' . Have seen
several Community comments stating similar but not identical problems. None
appear to have been positively solved and I have tried a couple of them.
Could anyone please advise an effective solution that is not too technically
risky to install, as I am far from an expert.

See if the following helps, although written for XP, should be the same for
Vista.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324757

After this, uninstall BOTH printers.

The latest drivers for the 2575 can be found at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=441240&lang=en

and for the 1020 at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=439320&lang=en

After that, ensure your PDF software is up to date - you don't state which
application you were using for opening/reading PDFs. The spooler failing is
almost always due to corrupted printer drivers.
