Printer Sharing

I have just setup Printer sharing between two PCs over a LAN with a
wired router. One PC is on XP Home and the other on XP Pro. In the
Printer list in the XP Pro PC the XP Home printer is shown only as "Auto
HP Desk Jet......" The word Auto has been added to the printer name for
some reason. I can send material to that printer all OK.

In the XP Home PC printer list I see two listings for the printer on the
XP Pro PC. They are shown as "Auto HP Laser Jet..... and "HP Laser
Jet...." On the XP Home PC I can send material to the "HP Laser
Jet..... " printer but not to the "Auto HP Laser Jet....." printer. Why
and what is this "Auto" designation added to the beginning of the
printer name and why is it a second HP Laser Jet printer listing (non
working) in the HP Home printer list. I have tried deleting it but it
does not get deleted and no warning or error message is shown when I try
to delete it.

You can delete one without the Auto in front of it. XP will automatically
find and install a printer over a LAN that is shared and has available
drivers. This is the "Auto" part of the name. If you do not want it to
find and install printers automatically, then you open Windows Explorer, use
Tools, Folder Options, View and uncheck the first box under Files and
Folders.

In your case where Auto appears to be the one NOT working, disconnect the PC
from the LAN, uninstall both printers, reconnect to the LAN and reinstall.

Right click on the ones you don't want and select delete. If they are
network printers, ensure you are disconnected from the network first.

Carl, I did as you suggested and I was able to delete the shared XP Pro
printer on the XP Home PC. The Home PC does have the Search for
printers, etc checked, but when I started both PCs on the network again,
the Home PC did not automatically find the Pro PC printer. However I
just added it on the Home PC manually with no Auto (Printer) in the list
this time. Not sure how the non-working one got there in the first setup.

Thanks again,

I had one case of this, one with Auto before the printer name and one
without it. I was told the Auto one was the one where the printer was
automatically found and the other one was the one I added with "Add a
Printer. I disconnected the PC from the network by unplugging the cable
and then deleting both printers, reconnecting the cable and seeing if
the printer was automatically found again. It wasn't so I added it
again and I had only one after that.

You may want to just delete one of the printers after disconnecting the
cable and see if that fixes it for you.
