Printer Share Access Problem

T

Tom

I have a shared printer running on a Win 2k Server w/SP4.

Two workstations, one Win XP Pro SP1 and one Win 2k Pro
SP4 are connected to this printer. Both of the
workstations can print fine, but the Win 2k workstation
displays an 'Access Denied, unable to connect' message
all the time. My user on the Win 2k machine is unable to
manage print documents and so on, even though she CAN
print! The Win XP Pro machine is absolutely fine no
problems at all.

We are on a peer-2-peer workgroup and the usernames and
passwords concerned are identical on both the wrokstation
and the server. My user can access shared folders on the
same server fine, it's just the printer that has the
problem.

I have checked and the user permissions are fine, all
users have full permission to manage docs and everything.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

I have a similar type of setup and have the same type of
problem...only I get the "printer name is invalid"
message. I've been all over the web, MS, etc. I can see
the printer from the remote machine, can access files
okay, but it will not allow me to add the printer UNLESS I
use an IP connection. At that point it works but only
allows me to print one page at a time.

Anyway, I'll look forward to any responses that you
receive.

Is the Shared name of the printer 13 characters/numbers or less with no
spaces or illegal characters in it?

yes....the shared name is "hpoffice" (without quotes).
Also...here's a copy of the problem in more detail:

Hi,

I have a small home network with three machines all
running Windows 2000. My main machine(#1) has a HP
Officejet d145 connected to it via USB. A second machine,
(#2), is connected via a hardwire connection to a Linksys
wireless router. File/printer sharing are not a problem
for either of these machines. A third machine, (#3),
connects to the network on a Linksys wireless connection.
File sharing is fine but the problem is accessing the
network printer. I can "see" the printer on the network
from #3 but get the "printer name is invalid" message. I'm
aware of the character-naming problems associated with
windows 2000 and this does not seem to be the issue. I've
renamed the computers, workgroup, printer and the problem
still exists. In addition, I did an uninstall/reinstall of
the printer software...but to no avail. One solution that
did help was making a connection via #1's IP address which
did allow for a connection...but created a new problem.
Printing would only allow me to print one page at a time.
Anyway.....I'd love to hear any suggestions on this
matter. Thanks.

Could you check the order of the print provider?

Control Panel, Network Connections, Advanced, Advanced Settings , Provider
Order , Print Provider
LanMan should be on the top
