Printer problems

Alan C

We have a network with SBS2k server and NT4 wk/stns. Printers are
either networked (tcp/ip) or shared.

In preparation to a full upgrade we have replaced two NT4 with XPPro
boxes. Networking is fine but printers are a problem.
1. A shared printer attached to XP box doesn't appear on the NT4 add
printer list - error RPC server unavailable - RPC services are
started on all pc's.
2. A networked printer on a 3-port HP jet direct server cannot be
connected to the XP pc's as they won't allow the port address - e.g.
192.168.248.173:5101 to be entered.

Help, Please.

Are you the administrator trying to make this work. Do you have an IT dept,
that can set this up for you?

Alan C

Yes, I am the admin (and the IT dept) so I have tried all the
obvious, and am hoping for some pointers to things I haven't yet
come up against, or have missed.

Hi Alan,

On your XP box that you have connected a printer to open up the Printers and
Faxes window and select File -> Server Properties

Click on the Drivers tab. In here are a list of drivers for the printers you
have installed on the box. As you are connecting NT workstations to this,
can you confirm that NT4.0 drivers are available as well?

A

Alan C

Hate to say it, but this isn't the problem. I have drivers on disk
for all the printers as we have been using them on NT4 for over a
year. The problem is that when I try to add a networked (shared)
printer to NT4, the browser shows the machine name, but doesn't list
the printer as shared/available, even if I specify
\\machine\sharename. The only difference then to now is the new XP
box that has the printer connected has a different ip address from
NT4 box that it's replaced.

O.k

Just to clear this up them the scenario is as follows:

You have an XP box with a pritner connected to it
You have shared this printer on the XP box
From a NT machine you attempt to connect to the shared printer on the XP box

This connection fails

Correct?

Spot on! Also, on the XP box - in 'printer- properties' - I have
added all appropriate users to 'security'.

Fraser,

I'll be back on site tomorrow, so I'll try your suggestion. If it's
still a problem, I'll re-post with any more info that I can glean.

Thanx a lot.
