Printer on LPR ports

Sandra

I have 2 printers installed on LPR ports. These printers
are connected directly to the hub and each has a unique
IP address, they are not attached to print servers.
However we have a glitch in that one specific computer
must be on in order for these printers to be recognized
on the network so that the other computers can utilize
the printers. Any of the other computers can be off and
the printers work fine. I should think that these
printers would show up as a network resource regardless
of which computers are online. Any ideas on how to fix
this?

Thanks,
Sandra

If all the XP or Win2000 machines connect directly to the IP of the
printers, there should be no need for a specific machine to be turn on in
the network. Is the hub also a router for DSL or cable modem?

Did you statically assign the IP addresses on the printer or did they obtain
a DHCP address from one of the other systems or a router on your network?

What OS is the specific computer which when turned off causes the problem.
Can you ping the addresses at all when the computer is turned off? Is the
specific computer used as a firewall?

If you can ping the printers, you should be able to print to them. If you
can't ping them there is some sort of network routing problem.
