In previous windows version (e.g. Me) I could quickly click start - settings
- printers... to get status of que entries for printers. In XP's Control
panel it seems more tedious. I was hoping I could make a shortcut to get to
the printer page.
Is this possible/reasonable.

Is the Printer and Faxes icon showing in your start menu ?

If not, do the following to turn it on and this will create a shortcut to
your printers folder in XP.

1. Click Start button follow by control panel.
2. Click the Start Menu and Taskbar icon.
3. Click the Start Menu tab and then click the customize button.
4. Click the advanced tab, scroll down the start menu list and tick printer
and faxes.
5. Click OK, Apply, Ok.

Hope that helps ?
