Printer has error on install, wont allow anything to be printed.

I recently had a bunch of viruses on my computer, I got them all off and now
something is wrong with my printer. it worked fine before. when i try to
print a page from internet explorer, the window closes. When I try to print
from Microsoft Word an error message comes up and says "No printers are
installed. To install a printer, point to Settings on the Windows Start
menu, click printers, and then double-click add printer" when i click Add
Printer is says the printer spooler service is not running. My printer
worked fine until after this virus. I don't know what it did. When i had
the printer icons under the Printer and Faxes folder, and clicked Settings
under file, the message that says printer spooler service is not working
comes up again..My printer is a HP Deskjet 5440 and i am running Windows XP
previously installed by the seller i got my computer from. anymore
information needed to help ask.
