Printer friendly

Where would one without massive training be able to allow the printer
friendly ability to a web page
?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Save the current page under a new name and remove any items you don't want to print, then link to
this page as the Printer Friendly page.

Link exactly how. Some say I need to use a macro others say that I need to
establish a control-F9 then a shift- F9 that requires the reciever have
macros allowed. then others say to do it with pop ups or hyperlink or setting
up a Table of Authorities (TOA) for indexing.

I want something that works no matter how the reciever is set up and as
simple as can be. Bearing that in mind if I wanted to insert a TOA for
indexing to subject matter will it work directly from Word pages cut and
pasted into my website?

I would think that the simplest way if you don't want the user to leave the
page they are viewing is to make it a pop-up.

You seem to be using MS Word to do your site. (you never mentioned that you
were using Word in your original post, but your mention of Table of
Authorities (??) and Macros(??) in your OP, this tells me you're not
actually asking about Frontpage. (I could be wrong....please correct me if
this is not right).

Cutting/Pasting Word content directly into Frontpage doesn't work too well
(creates really bad HTML code for one thing)- and it certainly doesn't take
the things like macros or whatever with it, since FP doesn't have that
functionality. All I can suggest is you cut the text from FP to Notepad and
from Notepad to Frontpage, and reformat all your text again. FP has no such
feature as "Table of Authorities" since this is a Word feature.

You also seem to be over-complicating the situation which your mention of
macros and table of authorities, with your question of making a
print-friendly web page.

Suggestion :
You need to redo your site from scratch in Frontpage, then follow Thomas
Rowe's, and my additional advice below:

In Frontpage, you need to create a "Web" (read a book about Frontpage if
you're unfamiliar with it, or consult the help files. Also, this newsgroup
is for the benefit of all ask more questions if you need to)

Open the web, then open the page(s) you want to make printable. Save them
as separate names, e.g. save
'about.html' as 'about_print.html'

As Thomas Rowe suggests you need to duplicate the page then remove all the
headers, menus, etc from the page and save it, so you're left with the text
only. If need be, place the text in a narrower table so that it won't cut
off the edges on a user's printer (hard to predict how a user's printer will
behave).

Again I reiterate: you should be using Frontpage for web pages. Frontpage
is not a word processor and doesn't function like one, therefore settting
things like "page" margins is not as easy as you would do in MS Word.

A web 'page' is not like a printed-page (A4 or Foolscap paper) There are no
page-breaks as such since web pages are intended as an online medium and
each "page" is a continous stream of text and information.

Can you please respond, confirming that you're using Word rather than
Frontpage.

I'm sorry, yes I was trying to use Word in so much as alot of my data is
formated in it's format. I understand that it will not take everything into
a html web page without perhaps some new tweaks. I am just starting and will
do everything in Front Page because it will work and require less redo'ing of
work; it's just one more learning curve I will have to jump into.

As to the original question I just want to do three things:
1) allow for printer friendly printing
2) be able to write a short outline of subjects allowing the reader to click
on highlighted text to see more detailed information
3) allow for search within the web for specific items or text.

Thank you for you time, I know I should already know how to do all of this
Sincerely,
Doc C

Perhaps, you can use a Word version of the site for printing (user would
require Word or a WP that opens *.doc files), but have the normal site as
well. then people can open/download the word file and print that.
Or, convert the word file to PDF (user would require Adobe Reader), or as
originally suggested make a duplicate page without your navigation etc
suitable for printing.
