Print to File Problem

After displaying Device Manager and viewing the available hardware I chose
Print and then Print to File on a memory stick. But when I try to print
the file, it comes up in what appears to be machine language with occasional
readable words. it doesn't read anything like what was on the screen. I did
this as a
precaution since we were about to reformat a computer and wanted to recall
the exact devices to utilize post reinstall of XP SP2. Unfortunately, we
did the reformat and when we went to another XP SP2 computer to print the
file the above happened. Please any help would be appreciated.

Print to File is used when you want to print on a printer that is not
physically attached to your PC (a friend's , a print shop etc.) The output
is binary - stuff that printers interpret but not humans. Latter one is
expected to take the file to a PC with the printer and send the file to the
printer for printing (you cannot open it in Word or whatever software was
used to make the file)

If this file is all that is left you need to "copy" it to the printer than
was referenced when it was generated. Sorry, I can't tell you how to do this
with Windows - I did this many times in the DOS era. Then you could scan it
in with OCR software.

best wishes

Kem,

You can print these files as long as you have a same or similar
printer.

You need to share the printer then at the command prompt type:

copy filename.prn \\computername\printersharename
