Print Spooler Service windows server 2000

Andrew Marks

Hi

I run a windows 2000 server based network. I have
recently experienced strange behaviour with the print
spooler service.

This service on my Printer Server keeps dropping off
intermittantly for no apparent reason. Of course when
this stops, all printers installed on this server stop as
well.

We have to go to windows services to restart the print
spooler service.

Any suggestions anyone? There is nothing worse than
having a deadline that involves printing and having a
print server that becomes unreliable for no apparent
reason.

Hi Andrew,

Please check the event log it might shed some light on the
problem.
other things you can try is

1) Reinstall the Printer driver, ( clean the DLL via
server properties )

worst solutions is ...
2) Add one job in Scheduled Tasks to restart the spooler
like
"net start spooler" for every 5 MIN.

I also have been experiencing the same kind of issues. I've trie
applying all the service packs and patches. I even thought it was dow
to the new jet direct type software now used as the older hp printer
were fine. If anyone finds a solution then please let me know.
Thank you.

Hi,

I have this problem to.
Can not print from client, and can not add shared printer from client.
Printing from server works just fine.
Restarting the spooler on the server makes everything work again.
Sometimes this happens all the time, and sometimes it can go weeks
between each stop.

I would be very greatful for any help in this case.

Old NT4.0 and bad printdrivers will cause these problems, therefore, try to
update or isolate drivers which are causing these problems. 99% of all
problems with the spoolservice is caused by bad print drivers...

an alternative could be to schedule a job to clear the spool folder once a
week.

We had the same problem on our Citrix Metaframe farm on Win 200
servers.

We solve 99% of the problems with the restart of the spooler service o
daily basis (around midnight).

But ocasionaly we still have to manualy restart the spooler service o
server
