Print Spooler defective

Does anyone know if this is a regular problem of Windows XP Professional? At
least two of our brand new machines have faulty Print Spoolers. They just
will not stay active and that means we cannot only print, but use print
preview, margins and other related functions in all Microsoft Office
programs. It is very fustrating. Woul wiping the machine and starting over
be the only answer?
