Last night my printer ( Canon MPX 730 ) worked perfectly this morning no
printer in the computer hit "add new printer " and get a message " can not be
completed. The print spool service is not running.'
Have removed sevice pack 2 and reinstalled it but still cann't get any joy
any help would be appreciated

Are there any error reports in Event Viewer?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

gotchy,

Goto Control Panel (Classic View) -> Administrative Tools -> Services

Scroll down and double click on Printer Spooler

In Service Status area, click on Start button

Click on Recovery tab and set 1st, 2nd and Subsequent Failures to
Restart the Service.

Then, check your Printers and Faxes. The printer should return there.

SP-2 might not have had anything to do with this as I've seen this
happen more on Win2000 systems than XP.

Also, when you get the MPX730 back to printing status, go to Canon's web
site and download the latest drivers for that model. I tried searching
their site but couldn't find any MPX730.

Hi Tim
Thanks for the reply.I tried as you asked nd tried the "start" bit then got
an error message
Could not start the Print Spooler Sevice on Local Computer.
Error 1068:The dependancy service or group failed to start.

I have since tried to do a system restore to an earlier date and am told
that it cannt do it due to no changes on the system so I don't have a clue
whats wrong with it.
I did have a Lexmark printer installed on this machine a while back while
trying to sort out some problems for a friend but uninstalled it the other
day and I wonder if any drivers ect went with it.
By the way the Canon printer is a MP-730 the X means a document feeder and
this has been on the computer for 5 months with no problems whatsoever so its
not the drivers for it.
I really wonder at time if computers were put on earth to frustrate us all
into oblivion or are they are help.
Sorry to ramble but I think its getting to me.

Thanks for the reply and please see the reply I sent to Tim below to save me
writing it again

When mentioning error reports it helps to mention the Source, which for
your message I believe to be Kernel.

The Print Spooler Service is dependent on the RPC ( Remote Procedure
Call ) service. Go to Start, Administrative Tools, Service and check
that Remote Procedure Call is set to start automatically and that it has
started. The following Knowledge Base Article may help:

A bit further information
I erased a part of an older printer programme that I had installed on this
computer it was a Lexmark printer and the part I erased was "LexBces server"
which on investigation is required by the print spool service to operate. Why
I don't know but I got the original instalation disks bfrom the friend that I
originally helped with the problem but it will not load the printer software
without the printer attached by USB which I can not do due to her no longer
having the printer.
If anyone has any ideas where to get the said driver for it I would
appreciate it greatly.
PS I looked on the lexmark site and the drvers are available for download at
34 meg
but I only have dial up not broadband due to our phone company being a
little slow in this area.
All i really need is lexbces.exe hopefully.

It worked for me

Here is what I did to fix the exact same problem

(to get a command prompt window: Start-Programs-Accessories-CommandPprompt)

In a command prompt window type:
sc config spooler depend= RPCSS (& press enter) ( note the space between = and RPCSS )
then type:
net stop spooler (& press enter) ( it may say it couldn't stop it...don't worry)
then type:
net start spooler ( & press enter) ( it will say starting... wait for it ... then type EXIT)

That will close the command prompt window.

The printer should work ok... mine did
I fought this for 2 weeks until I found the message above
