My Dell system came with an OEM Windows XP Pro version,
and I am having the problem described in Microsoft
Knowledgebase article #835318 -- the spoolsv.exe
consistently uses 50% of my system resources. Very
annoying. I would like to request the hot fix from
Microsoft but can't even get to a contact point to do
this. Already spoke with Dell, and they have directed me
back to Microsoft. How can I proceed?

You'll have to contact Microsoft support as outlined
in the Knowledge Base Article.

I appreciate the advice to "contact Microsoft," but that
is exactly what I have done, only to be shuttled to the
suggestion to "contact Dell" since this is an OEM software
package. The KB835318 indicates that the hotfix may be
available at no cost, but just where (and to whom) do I
make that request?

An update on this...

I was finally able to reach someone at Microsoft who
provided information on obtaining the hotfix (for a fee).
I applied the fix, but it did not solve the problem.

A little more investigation revealed that there were two
old print jobs on the printer "Microsoft Image Writer." I
cancelled those print jobs, deleted that printer from the
Printer and Faxes folder, removed the driver for it, and
the problem has not reappeared.

Perhaps this will save others from spending money for the
fix which didn't work.
