Obtaining a Hotfix from Microsoft

M

M and D

I have the issue described in "Sounds do not play after you resume Windows from hibernation on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2". This is KB892559.

The article states: "A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft...contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix...visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support."

As you can see, this is a generic 'Contact Us' page. Apparently, I am only able to "Contact a support professional by phone or e-mail for help" if I purchased the product separately, otherwise I have to contact my OEM.

Here's the problem: My OEM (Dell) says it does not supply or support Windows hotfixes - I have to get them from Microsoft. But Microsoft won't even talk to me unless I pay them $59.00.

Rock? Hard place?

How do I get this hotfix? I'll stop using Hibernation before I'll pay 59 bucks. Thanks for your help.

Exactly - and I do not have a Software Assurance Agreement, Professional Contract , TechNet Subscription, MSDN Subscription or a MSPP (Microsoft Partner Program).

How do you think Gates gets richer and richer? His OS breaks your
computer with one hotfix and makes you pay for another to "unfix" it.

This bit is the relevant part of the KB Article.

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines
that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support
costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not
qualify for the specific update in question

I was provided with a Hotfix free of charge for a generic OEM copy after
telephoning Microsoft UK! However, you should check the Hotfix is not
included in a later Windows Update before making the telephone call.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gerry, I already received the hotfix from Microsoft, and with no need to fork over $59 and then hope someone else will decide that yes, you really are entitled to receive that hotfix free of charge.

I did realise you had already got the Hotfix. I just wanted to end your
thread on a more positive note so that others are not dissuaded from
making a call. After having made the call you can refuse to pay but I
don't recall it being suggested at any point that I would have to pay.

I got a special URL from someone in this group from which I was able to
order the hotfix by simply filling out a form, without speaking to
anybody or so much as hunting for my wallet. I'm not so sure I was
entitled to obtain the hotfix this way, but I got it anyway.

Otherwise, I would have to give my credit card number up front and then
hope my explanation of my symptoms convinced Microsoft of the need for
the hotfix so my credit card would not be charged.
