Print server in XP

I have just set up a Netgear PS111W print server at home so I can
print wirelessly from my 2 laptops to my HP Deskjet 840C (XP on both
machines). The prolem is that when I print from an appliction, the
application freezes until the printing has finished. When the printer
was directly connected, the printing just went on in the background
after it was queued and I could continue with the application.

Any clues as to what I am missing?

TIA

I had the same problem when prining from Windows XP though Windows Me was
"better", it would spool but not queue print jobs, this is using a wired
Netgear PS110 two port device. I found that the answer was to establish a
new IP port in Xp and carefully build the access through that. Take care or
you can get into a mess, (I did with the second machine that I connected
this way), you do have to find the connection and make sure that you
identify the exact logical port correctly. Now print jobs queue properly.
With Windows Me the first job would print out Ok but a second request sent
before the firts one was through would crash, i.e. the printer in the
machine in question, this si still the case and one of the reasons that I
have started to upgrade the children's machines, that and the neew to have
XP for new software to run/install..

Thanks for the reply Richard. I solved the problem after sending the
messsage. Originally I installed the printer by finding the print
server on the network, then XP asked me what printer I wanted. My new
method of installing was to open a new port. One option I was given
was 'Netgear Print Server port', so I chose that and attached my
printer to that port. It now works perfectly. I'm not sure what type
of port I had before.
I'm sure it was pure luck that I found the solution, but often there's
no other way with these things!

Assign your PS device a static IP so it doesn't change.

Once you've done that, when you install the printer, choose to install
a local printer. When it asks to specify a port, create a new local
TCP-IP port and supply the static IP address you assigned above.

The wizard will walk you through the rest.
