print monitors in registry

E

Edward

I've read info on this board re: deleting out of the
registry any third-party print monitors. What are the
implications involved in doing this? ie. do printers need
to be re-installed? Can regular printing carry on as usual
afterward?

Presently, our print spooler service stops on a daily
basis for our term serv clients and yes, we have third
party monitors in our registry. (HP and Lexmark)

Thanks so much for any input.

If you remove the registry entry for a Port Monitor, any printer driver that
uses that monitor will cease to function. The usual way that print monitor
gets installed is by adding a printer make/model that uses it. In some
cases (e.g. so called "Print Server" type devices), the installer for the
Port Monitor comes with a particular device and can be seperately installed.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324757 for some
additional information, including a list of the Port Monitors that are
installed by default (are not "third party" Port Monitors and should not be
deleted).
