Sorry if this has been asked before, but what is shellexe.exe?

When I double-click it, it says in part:

"What is ShellExe
ShellExe launches documents with their associated viewer application. Used
in autorun.inf, ShellExe allows to automatically open a document as soon as
a user puts your CD in."
