Is my boot disk corrupted? What can I do?

First, I got error msg when try to start my Window XP, got msg
<windows root> \ system32\hal.dll is missing.

So I had to restart the computer with original Window xp CD with Recovery
Console. I did chkdsk /R, and it stops at 18%.
Now, when I try to start the computer, it gives error Pri Master HDD error
run Setup. I don't have a floppy boot disk. I just have the XP CD
rom software
that come with my PC. The msg on the computer tells me to run a system diag
nostic utility from hardware manufacture, but it keeps asking for boot
disk A.
Please help, thank you!

Sounds like the drive may have failed. Download and run a diagnostic utility
from the drive manufacturer's web site.

I won't be able to download from the web site. My PC can't even start
right now because the drive is corrupted. Should I get a new harddrive?
But then, can I install XP os again on the new harddrive? Will I have
to get a new activation key again from Microsoft?

* Why not? If you can read this email you should be able to go to the drive
manufacturer's web site and download their utility.

* Better to diagnose the problem before spending money on new hardware.

* Yes, you'll need to reactivate.

* Yes, you'll need to reactivate.

But you keep the same key for reactivation.

You are right! Thanks, I download with a different computer and
then run the diagnostic software on my PC, the software can't find the
hard drive.

Anyway, I thought I have bought a new harddrive and reinstalled everything
again from scratch. Now the XP is installed, the computer is running
but it said I don't have sound device? The speaker is not working
anymore.
My motherboard is supposed to be an integrated one and I did not buy
a separate sound card. This is going to be a slow step for me.
Any one has idea? I just installed the new hardrive, to replace the old
one. Nothing has changed. Why is the sound not working now?
The computer is 2 yrs old. The store I bought it from no longer exist.

You should have a driver CD that came with the PC. You can install the sound
drivers from the CD. At the very least you may be able to see what sound card
you have and go to the manufacturers website to download the newest drivers.

Good luck.
