Preventing Standby

Lately, I notice that my machine does not go into standby. Neither
does the monitor turn off.
I wonder how would the computer know whether to go into standby or
not ? What "resets" the standby timer or monitor turnoff timer ?

Busy software(CPU activity) files being written to the harddrive, noise
from the mouse or keyboard.
