Preventing Outlook from disconnecting after a send/receive?

Outlook will always disconnect my dial-up connection when I perform a
send/receive. "Hang up when finished..." under Options - Mail Setup is not
checked.

You provided no information.
Need at a minimum:
1. Outlook version
2. Mail account type
3. Connection type
4. Automatic polling settings.

Outlook should disconnect if you have set an automatic polling interval for
a phone line connection type.

I'm not sure how to answer all of these questions, but let's see if this helps:
1. Outlook 2003
2. pop/smtp
3. dial up
4. ???? (Where do I find this?

"Dial up" is not a connection type that you can specify for a mail account.
Examine the properties of your mail account to see what connection type you
specified.
To see how you have configured automatic polling, examine Tools > Options >
Mail Setup > Send/Receive...

Did someone else set up your installation?

I am setting up this installation myself. I am trying to switch over from
using Outlook Express 6.

The only thing I can find that relates to "connection type" is under
Internet Email Settings>Connection>connect using my phone line (which is
currently checked)

Polling is configured this way: schedule an automatic send/receive every 5
minutes

When using Outlook Express 6, I was able to have the program automatically
do a send/receive when I started the program, without hanging up after it was
done. I just want to be able to do that again.

Thanks,
Matt

Then as I said, Outlook is behaving as designed. When you designate an
automatic polling interval and are using a phone line connection, Outlook
will manage that connection by disconnecting it after an automatic poll. If
you don't want it to disconnect, then change your options. Either do your
polling manually or change your connection type to LAN.
