Preparing to install

I have both Office XP 2002 and Office 2007 installed on my new laptop
running Windows 7 64 bit - just as I did in my now old laptop.

Every time I open Word 2002 (from Office XP) on the new laptop I get a
popup saying "Preparing to install" and the same thing happens when I
open Word 2007.

This used to happen on my old laptop too but finally stopped. Not sure
why. Is there something I can do to stop the two Words from "installing"
themselves anew every time they are opened?

Since you have two Office versions installed, they will inevitably "compete"
over the file associations. To work around that, see the "Hacking the Registry"
section of the article at http://www.gmayor.com/toolbars_in_word_2007.htm.

Do I need to do anything about the file associations so that doc gets opened
by Word 2002 and docx gets opened by Word 2007?

I'm afraid it's all or nothing: either all Word files open in Word 2007 or all
of them open in Word 2002.

But, of course, if it's important to edit a particular file in a particular
version, you can always start Word first and then open the file.
 
Not necessarily. I have my system set up so that .doc files open in Word
2003 and .docx files in Word 2007 or 2010 if that version is open (otherwise
they try to open in Word 2003, with conversion confirmation). I don't have
to actually be in Word 2007/2010, just have it open, and then I can
double-click on a file or attachment, and it will open in the newer version.
Since I always have Word 2003 open, there is no issue with .doc files, but I
suspect the same would be true for them.

Which operating system are you running? I feel that it's difficult to work with
file types in Windows 7, so I haven't really bothered with it...

But how do you get around the "re-registration" of file associations when you
start, say, Word 2007 after running Word 2003?

Thanks for the tip on double-clicking a Word icon with a particular Word version
open. That may come in handy at times.

I've got the NoReReg keys set for all three versions, and I can open any one
without it "configuring." I had it that way on the old XP system, and I
painstakingly set it up that way on the new Windows 7 box (but on this one I
was much more careful to keep each version segregated from the others, with
its own template and startup folders, though they share document folders).

I see. In Windows 7, I set up a virtual machine running Windows XP and Word 2003
to keep the versions entirely separate. I rarely run the VM, though. :-)
