Preparation for installing SP2

Walter R.

I would like to install SP2 on my XP Pro SP1. Is there a list showing what
preparation is necessary or desirable? Should I run a repair installation
just to make sure that my system is OK?

Should I uninstall the Windows Firewall, Zone Alarm and the AVG virus
checker?

You should be okay for download UNLESS you have some
special hardware AND/OR software installed on your PC. If
you do have the special stuff, you should wait until
everyone has worked out compatability and drivers. If
not, like I said, you should be okay to download. Hope
this helps.

I wouldn't get it. It ph|_|(|<3<| my computer, and I had to reinstall XP.
I've looked through some posts, and I've seen a number of similar instances.

Here's another set of recommendations from another post:
Recommendarions for Installing XPSp2
1: Made sure I had all the latest drivers for my peripherals
2: Made sure I had all available updates for my software
3: Did a thorough disk cleanup
4: Did a thorough virus scan
5: Did a thorough adware scan with Ad Aware and Spybot
6: Imaged my hard drive using Powerquest Drive Image
7: Installed SP2 - stand alone network install.
8: Did a complete defrag of my system partition

I understand that SP2 makes a huge restore point and a lot of backup files
for potential uninstall of SP2. These apparently take up a lot of disk
space.

If I make a image bckup of both my system partition and my data partition
before installing SP2, do I really need all that wasted space? Can I just
go ahead and delete the restore files SP2 makes?

We have put together some guidance on Installing SP2:

I would have the Windows firewall on, the other two temporarily
disabled, but no need to uninstall. A repair reinstall is quite
unnecessary
