Preoblems installing software in Win XP

Hi, I am facing problems when trying to install any
software from a CD in my PC, windows xp is already
installed in my PC and a set up error message is
displayed when trying to install something, for example
Office 2000 prof, the error message states "error
1711..error in set up.exe...it cannot be
installed...cancel" and installation is aborted, the same
happens with other software i want to install

Can anybody help me?
