Recently I have noticed when saving work 2 copies are made...
1 the original
and another with a prefix ~$t which I cannot access and is in a shaded colour.

Happens when using passport or saving on hard drive.
Can anyone tell what this is please?

Thanks Penny

Penny, Stefan has said that these are temporary files and, to the best of my
knowledge, he is correct.

I always delete any files starting with ~$ and have never had any problems
doing that so I think it will be quite safe for you to do exactly the same.

"Note that the temporary files are being used by Word and, therefore, cannot
be deleted while Word is running." OK, yes, fine, but I always delete them
from my main default directory and have never experienced any problems at all
doing that so I think it would be quite safe to do that. Also, I believe that
if you try to delete them whilst the application (WORD) is still running you
are warned at that point that you cannot delete them.

If you see random temp files in your default directory, it's a sign
that at some point recently Word did not close normally -- it crashed,
or there was a power outage, etc.

That's my point exactly: it's normal to see temporary files while you are
working in Word, but if they are left behind after you quit the application,
then actions must be taken (as described in the linked article).
