Lately I have noticed that my system has slowed down and after consulting the MS
help/support & Technet sites, I came across the document
Fast System Startup for PCs Running Windows XP
and the program
Bootvis.exe
and an article suggesting I delete everything in the prefetch folder.
The last being the simplest I tried but no improvement.
Running Bootvis clearly shows that prefetch is not doing anything during bootup
at least. (note, this was tried before and after clearing out the prefetch
folder)
The Fast System Startup document mentions the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\PrefetchParameters EnablePrefetcher
which was at 5 and setting this to 0 (no prefetch) made no difference. The
document made no reference the correct value, what value should it be? What
value do other people have?
The prefetch folder contains lots of *.pf files that are dated the current day
but the file 'notosboot-B00DFAAD.pf' (mentioned in the Fast System Startup
document) which is supposed to log the previous 8 boots does not exist anywhere
on the drive. (yes I know about hidden files & it's not supposed to be hidden
anyway)
The Prefetch folder was repopulated with *.pf files after cleaning it out &
rebooting so 'something' must be happening but booting/app loading is still slow
& Bootvis shows no prefetch at all.
Has anyone got any idea as to what is happening?
I hope I've provided enough info & described things relatively clearly.
Thanks in advance
